Notes from the (Lava) Field
Lava Butte – Bend, OR
Wilderness Works field campers discovering geology in Oregon’s high desert surrounded by volcanoes and lava fields. Mount Jefferson and the Sisters Mountains off in the distance. We are amazed to see how enthused our young people are about Geology! How seeing makes a difference! True experiential education!
Crater Lake, OR
As our crew toured the rim of this stunning scene our campers learned about the enormous explosive eruption 7,700 years ago of Mount Mazama with a gigantic collapse that formed this amazing large volcanic depression, or caldera. We feel a lot smaller today! (Map courtesy of U.S. Geological Survey)
